The risks that turn "free money" into losses
This strategy looks safe on a spreadsheet. It isn't. Here's what breaks it:
- Funding flips negative. In a sharp selloff, shorts pay longs. You're short the perp, so you now pay funding instead of collecting it. If the flip lasts weeks, your yield turns negative.
- Liquidation. Even at 1–2x leverage, a violent wick can liquidate your short before your spot position adjusts. You need buffer margin.
- Smart contract risk. If the DEX gets hacked or has a bug, your position and collateral can be frozen or drained. This happened to multiple perp DEXs in 2025–2026.
